For the third year in a row, Milton Magazine received Gold in the Circle of Excellence Awards from the Council for the Advancement of Schools and Education (CASE). The award, in the independent/international school alumni magazine category, recognizes the magazine’s 2023 issues, which covered a year of leadership transition at Milton.
“This is a first-rate magazine that stands above other entries for the quality of its design, use of art and illustration, smart organization, and professional writing,” the judges remarked.
The spring and fall 2023 issues featured outgoing school leader Todd Bland and new Head of School Alixe Callen ’88, respectively. The issues were built around the themes of legacy and innovation and highlighted not just the achievements of these two respected administrators but stories about Milton people across generations and disciplines.
Milton Magazine Editor Sarah Abrams took the reins of the publication in the fall of 2019 and spearheaded an ambitious redesign with Patrick Mitchell of MO.D. (Fast Company, Nylon). Together with Marisa Donelan, associate magazine editor and Milton’s associate communications director, this small, talented team crafts compelling issues to tell engaging alumni stories and share the life-changing power of a Milton Academy education.
The team works under the guidance of Chief Communication Officer Eileen Newman and Dr. Callen. “There are endless stories to be told about Milton Academy, from the groundbreaking work of our alumni to the inspirational and transformative learning happening every day on campus,” Dr. Callen says. “Milton Magazine is a beautiful, well-written publication filled with stories that capture the heart and soul of this incredible school, connecting the Milton community around the globe to life on Centre Street. I am so proud of Sarah and her team!”
Milton Magazine works with freelance writers, photographers, and illustrators. The artists and writers who contributed to the award-winning 2023 issues include André Mora, Elaine McArdle, Steve Nadis, Greg Clarke, Thomas Hedger, Simone Massoni, Heather McGrath, Alex Eben Meyer, Walter Smith, Bryce Wymer, Peter Yang, Laurent Cillufffo, Pamela Fogg, Alex Gagne, Jimell Greene, Jason Grow, John Huet, Greg Mably, Scott Nobles (a member of Milton’s Visual Arts Department faculty), Brian Stauffer, and Caroline Tomlinson.
Since 2020, the magazine has received four Gold Circle of Excellence Awards; in 2022, it became the first publication not from a college or university to win the prestigious Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year Award in the award’s 80-year history. Milton Magazine was a finalist for the 2024 Sibley Award, which considers entries from publications by colleges, graduate schools, independent schools, and international schools.
