The Archivist role is a two-year position with potential for renewal at the end of the term depending on performance and school objectives. This is a unique position combining a traditional archival role as well as serving in an archival planning and organizational capacity that may fall outside the scope of a traditional “maintenance” archivist. As a result, the Archivist will take steps during the two-year timeframe to re-establish, document and organize the school’s archive program and materials in a way that the school is set up for future success.
Over the two years, and particularly at the outset, work will be required to re-establish and structure the existing archives, review myriad documents to determine their suitability for the archives, and research items identified across campus during recent construction. This includes bringing the archives and the management of other valuable or historically-related items as well as artwork (related to the school or considered works of art) to appropriate professional standards. The archivist will therefore be expected to establish policies and procedures that govern the archives and the school’s art collection, document the access/retrieval process for materials and/or the location of items on campus, and ensure that items gathered from across campus during recent construction are sorted and appropriate items maintained. In addition, it anticipated that other, unknown objectives and expectations will arise as part of these activities.
The individual will also serve in a traditional archivist capacity, focused on oversight of the School’s historical collection, which includes manuscripts, digital, photographs, publications, rare books, textiles, artifacts and artwork. The Archivist is responsible for the proper care and management of this collection accordance with best professional practices for the accessioning, description, storage, preservation and use of the collection.
The archivist must work collaboratively with staff members in multiple school departments as it relates to archival information, materials identification, and access. They must be comfortable working both within and outside the bounds of a traditional archivist role, as directed. The ideal candidate will demonstrate effective, accurate, and clear communication with excellent verbal, written, research, and decision making schools. The individual must also be receptive to supervision from the operations division and adhere to institutional decisions that may differ from traditional archival programs and activities.
The archivist will spend significant time at the school’s storage location in the Braintree Office Park which holds a significant number of items; office space in Braintree will be provided and it will be the primary location for digitization. In addition, the individual will be provided desk space in the CSG building on campus to support on-campus work.
