For the second year in a row, Milton Magazine, Milton Academy’s alumni publication, received a Gold award in the Circle of Excellence from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).
The award recognizes Milton Magazine’s spring and fall 2022 issues. The Circle of Excellence celebrates “exceptional achievement in advancement services, alumni relations, communications, fundraising, and marketing,” according to CASE. “These are the creative, inspiring projects that impact institutions and their communities—and transform lives around the globe.”
CASE judges noted: “Milton Magazine is a well-designed and well-written magazine. With its elegant design and smart writing, this magazine has all the hallmarks of a commercial publication. The variety of art and illustration, including the use of charts, boxes, numbers, and pull quotes, adds an extra level of interest and depth to the content. The feature stories written by the editor and associate editor were particularly enjoyable, providing insightful and engaging content that is sure to captivate readers.”
Milton Magazine was also a finalist for the 2023 Robert Sibley Magazine of the Year Award. In 2022, Milton Magazine made history by becoming the first publication from an independent school to receive the Sibley, the highest honor in the field; all prior Sibley award winners since the award’s establishment in 1943 had been from colleges and universities.
Milton Magazine has received Gold honors in the category of alumni and general-interest magazines from independent and international schools three out of the four years (2020, 2021, and 2023) since editor Sarah Abrams took the reins of the publication. She and associate editor Marisa Donelan, the school’s associate communications director, have built upon a long-standing tradition of excellent writing—a hallmark of both the magazine and Milton Academy at large.
Constructing each issue around a timely and thought-provoking theme, Abrams and Donelan harness storytelling and powerful design to demonstrate the lifelong impact of a Milton Academy education through the outstanding work of Milton alumni around the world. The magazine also shares exciting updates from campus, keeping its 13,000 readers connected with the school and its current students.
“Sarah and Marisa have shown that a small team of dedicated professionals can produce a stellar magazine, issue after issue,” said Milton Chief Communication Officer Eileen Newman, who oversees the magazine team. “Beyond their storytelling talent, the inspiration they draw from Milton’s fabulous alumni, students, and faculty comes through on every page. This deep admiration and respect for the school and its people makes Milton Magazine a terrific asset for connecting and engaging with readers, whose support of Milton Academy is so important to our current and future students.”
Since 2020, Patrick Mitchell of Modus Operandi Design (Fast Company, Nylon, O Magazine) has designed Milton Magazine’s print issues. DS Graphics | Universal Wilde is the printer. In print since the 1990s, Milton Magazine was established by Cathleen Everett.
This year’s Circle of Excellence Awards received entries from more than 4,000 CASE members in 27 countries.
