Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer

Milton Academy seeks a Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer (CEIO) to begin July 1, 2020. The CEIO will be a member of the School’s senior administrative team and will provide visionary, strategic leadership to sustain and strengthen current diversity, inclusion and anti-racist policies and further develop thoughtful and systemic innovative K-12 practices and programs in the areas of equity and inclusion for students, faculty, staff and alumni.  The CEIO will support the adult community in fostering students to become citizens who will make a long lasting anti-racist impact on the world they enter after Milton.

As a member of the head’s Administrative Council, the CEIO works with the Head of School and the administrative team, the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission (composed of board, alumni/ae, staff and faculty) and the Board Diversity Committee to lead the implementation of Milton’s DEI Strategic Plan. The CEIO coordinates and strengthens internal connections among departments to support, develop and align diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racist policies, programs and curriculum.

The CEIO also supports the work of the Principals of the Upper, Middle & Lower divisions, and the Equity and Inclusion Leadership Teams in each division, in their efforts to align policies, procedures, and practices related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. The CEIO leads the implementation of DEI professional development and its application within the institution, ensures that an anti-racist lens is brought to the hiring and retention process, and along with the principal is responsible for hiring, mentoring and overseeing members of the divisional DEI teams.  The CEIO will lead and support committees of employees, alumni/ae, and parents, to help foster community and to ensure that the voice of BIPOC community members is represented and heard in decision-making processes.  The CEIO will also serve on committees and task forces that have an impact on the School’s diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racist efforts.

The CEIO is supported by a team of faculty and staff in each of the three divisions. In the Upper School by: the Director of Equity, the Director of International Students, the Director of Community Engagement, and the Equity Coordinators.  In the Middle & Lower Schools by the DEI Implementation Teams.

Skills and Abilities. The Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer demonstrates an eagerness to build relationships and networks to strengthen ties within and beyond the Milton community, as Milton seeks to lead toward the many components of its equity and inclusion mission. The CEIO will model approachability, patience, persistence, flexibility, creativity, and ability to grasp the big picture as they support and challenge members of the school community to strive towards Milton’s anti-racist commitment.

The Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred, and minimum of seven years of administrative experience leading diversity, equity and inclusion work at the independent school or collegiate level
  • Participation in in-depth training in diversity, equity and inclusion practices at nationally recognized seminars and workshops
  • Strategic thinking skills with an extensive record of accomplishment in the implementation of effective and sustainable academic and affective programs in diversity, equity, inclusion and anti-racism in school settings
  • Superior project management skills, ability to work collegially with multiple constituencies and ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced work environment
  • Community building skill set and the capacity and interest to work with a broad spectrum of learners to build anti-racist competency in all constituencies — students, faculty, staff, administrators, trustees, and parents
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, allowing one to work effectively with colleagues, parents, and students
  • Capacity to facilitate conversations, mediate conflicts and represent the school in the larger community
  • Familiarity with restorative justice practices
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and experience leading diversity and inclusion trainings and developing cross-cultural skills in others
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Capacity for professional development and growth
  • Capability to enjoy working with colleagues and young people in a school environment
  • Introspective approach to cultivating an antiracist mindset within themselves and others.
  • Eagerness to give and receive feedback
